Liquid bulk transport company Anahuac Transport says that the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) sets the tone for road safety in America, including guidelines that all heavy truck owners must follow. One of these standards is called Gross Vehicle Weight Rating or GVWR, a guideline stipulating maximum safe weight capacities for tanker trailers on the roads. Strict compliance with these regulations keeps everyone safer and encourages trust on our highways.

Since the FHWA is in the U.S., the GVWRs are in pounds. Because of this, checking and rechecking when converting the weight of liquids measured via gallons is recommended. It also applies to the weight of dry bulk material measured via cubic feet. In addition, always check that you are within the tanker's legal limit.

Below, Anahuac Transport shares the general guidelines for commercial truck trailers:

Light

Class 1 GVWR: 0–6,000 pounds

Class 2 GVWR: 6,001–10,000 pounds

Class 3 GVWR: 10,001–14,000 pounds

Medium

Class 4 GVWR: 14,001–16,000 pounds

Class 5 GVWR: 16,001–19,500 pounds

Class 6 GVWR: 19,501–26,000 pounds

Heavy

Class 7 GVWR: 26,001 to 33,000 pounds

Class 8 GVWR: Greater than 33,001 pounds; includes all tractor-trailers

It should be noted that most tanker types are in the "Heavy" category.

Aside from the weight, Anahuac Transport reminds tanker owners to maintain their tankers regularly.

If your fleet has a worn-out or damaged tank trailer, it needs refurbishing. It will keep the trailer in good working condition. If you replace the trailer, it might be too costly for you. However, refurbishing allows owners and managers to retain the trailer for a much lower cost than buying a new one.

As Anahuac Transport explains, refurbishing allows you to update lighting, electrical, suspension, and brake system. Many tank trailers, like those made for food-grade transport, are designed to last for the long haul. As long as tank trailers don't have heavy damage to the tank barrel or other structural issues, they can be refurbished. Anahuac Transport also says you can add more years to the tank trailer's service life.

Finally, finding the right tank specialists when making repairs or inspections is essential. Your top choice should be techs with NBIC R-Stamp certifications, which means they can handle repair requirements on all types of tanks–oil and chemicals, crude oil vessels, and even dry bulk cargo carriers–according to Anahuac Transport. Hire professionals for peace of mind that your tanker fleets will pass muster.
